Hundreds of People Evacuated After a Blaze in Central Auckland

Celebrity chef Al Brown says that at least one of the high-profile eateries in Auckland had been gutted down.

Hundreds of workers were evacuated from nearby buildings after the fire destroyed Federal St Deli eatery in downtown Auckland. From a photo that Brown posted of the said kitchen, there were wires hanging from an exposed ceiling.

From his posting on Facebook, it seemed that fire had gutted the kitchen while leaving the depot. He also promised to update people once everything was back in order again.

This afternoon, authorities evacuated hundreds of people from Sky Tower where the fire was seen coming from a chimney. At 2 pm, there were reports of smoke coming from a federal house on the adjacent Federal St.

Also, workers from SkyCity administrative building and AA Tower were evacuated to the streets. Dinners from the popular hotels along Federal St strip were also asked to leave.

On depot, foods and drinks remained sitting on the table as dinners escaped smoke that had filled the restaurant.

Luckily, Grand hotel and SkyCity online casino nz were not affected by the incident.

The fire department received the first call about the fire at around 1.57pm.

The incident prompted the authorities to close off both Federal St and Albert St.

The fire was later extinguished but smoke could be seen billowing in the sky.
